Perimenopause is often misunderstood.

For many we expect and or experience disrupted sleep, mood swings, vaginal dryness, and a sense that something in the body is shifting in unfamiliar ways. It can feel confusing, frustrating, and even alarming.

But perimenopause isn’t something going wrong.

It’s a natural transition, not just for your body, but your spirit as well, and with proper understanding and guidance, the passage can be a beautiful, empowering one.

In this episode of Deeper with Darshana, Darshana speaks with Ayurvedic health counselor Kristen Timchak about how ancient wisdom can help us understand and support this phase of life.

What Is Perimenopause and Why It Matters

Perimenopause is the transitional stage leading up to menopause, when hormonal shifts begin to occur but menstruation has not yet fully stopped.

Unlike menopause, which is a defined moment in time, perimenopause is a longer season of change.

During this phase, estrogen levels fluctuate and gradually decline, impacting everything from sleep patterns to mood and physical comfort.

Rather than viewing this as a breakdown, Ayurveda frames it as a shift in how the body uses energy, moving from reproduction toward refinement and wisdom.

Understanding Perimenopause Through Ayurveda

Ayurveda is a system of medicine that views the body as part of nature.

According to this perspective, we move through life stages that mirror the seasons:

  • Childhood reflects spring
  • Adulthood reflects summer
  • Later life reflects fall and winter

Perimenopause is the transition from summer into fall.

This shift is governed by Vata energy, associated with air and space, which brings qualities like dryness, lightness, and variability.

This explains why symptoms such as insomnia, dryness, and irregular cycles are so common.

Common Symptoms and What They Mean

From an Ayurvedic lens, perimenopause symptoms are signs of imbalance, not failure.

Some examples include:

  • Waking up in the middle of the night
  • Dry skin, hair, or tissues
  • Digestive irregularities
  • Increased anxiety or restlessness
  • Brain fog or fatigue

These symptoms often reflect increased Vata, though Pitta (heat, inflammation) and Kapha (heaviness, stagnation) can also play a role.

Understanding which qualities are present helps guide how to restore balance.

How to Support Your Body During Perimenopause

Ayurveda emphasizes simple, consistent practices over extreme changes.

Some foundational ways to support your body include:

Prioritize rhythm:
Regular sleep and meal times help stabilize the nervous system and reduce erratic energy.

Increase warmth and nourishment:
Warm foods, herbal teas, and healthy oils can counteract dryness and support digestion.

Listen to your body:
Instead of forcing routines, respond to what your body is signaling in real time.

Reduce overstimulation:
Limiting excess caffeine, screen time, and stress helps calm the nervous system.

The Nervous System and Hormonal Shifts

Perimenopause is not just hormonal. It is neurological.

As the body changes, the nervous system becomes more sensitive. This can lead to disrupted sleep, heightened emotions, and a need for greater rest.

Supporting the nervous system through breathwork, somatic awareness, and gentle movement can significantly improve this transition.

Reclaiming Power, Pleasure, and Rhythm

One of the most powerful reframes in this conversation is that perimenopause is not a loss of power, but a transformation of it.

As hormonal patterns shift, many women experience increased clarity, stronger boundaries, and a deeper connection to their truth.

This can also impact intimacy and pleasure.

Rather than disappearing, erotic energy evolves. It becomes less about performance and more about presence, nourishment, and authenticity.

Creating Your Own Rite of Passage

Modern culture lacks meaningful rituals to mark life transitions.

Without them, many people move through perimenopause feeling unsupported or confused.

Creating personal or communal rituals can help anchor this experience.

Whether it’s gathering with others, journaling, or marking the transition intentionally, these practices bring meaning and support to the process.

A New Way of Moving Through Change

Perimenopause is not something to rush through.

It is a doorway.

When approached with awareness, compassion, and the right support, it becomes a powerful opportunity to reconnect with your body, your rhythm, and your deeper sense of self.
