Most people are having sex. Far fewer are talking about it. And even fewer still are the ones who are bringing genuine skill to those conversations.

In a recent episode of Deeper with Darshana, sex educator and Shameless Sex Podcast co-host Amy Baldwin joins Darshana Avila to unpack why sexual communication remains one of the most underdeveloped skills in adult relationships.

If you’ve ever struggled to name a desire, introduce a toy, or respond when a partner says something vulnerable, you’re not alone.

Why Sexual Communication Feels So Hard

Most of us were never given a model of open, thoughtful, pleasure-centered conversations about sex. Even in homes where sexuality wasn’t shamed outright, we rarely learned how to talk about desire, boundaries, curiosity, and repair.

Instead, we absorbed messages from porn, peers, and cultural scripts. Performance became more visible than communication. Silence became safer than vulnerability.

The result is adults who want connection but lack the language to create it.

The First Step: Talk About Talking About Sex

Before diving into fantasies or toys, Amy suggests something more foundational: talk about talking.

Instead of launching into a heavy request, begin with permission. Try:
“There’s something I’ve been thinking about, and it feels important. Is now a good time to talk?”

This simple step reduces defensiveness and signals care. It transforms confrontation into collaboration.

Lead With Appreciation, Not Criticism

When introducing change, appreciation regulates the nervous system. Start by naming what you value about your partner or your relationship. Then add your desire using “and” rather than “but.”

“I love our connection, and I’ve been curious about trying something new.”

This framing communicates expansion, not rejection.

How to Introduce Sex Toys Without Triggering Insecurity

Many people hesitate to bring toys into partnered sex out of fear it will imply inadequacy. Amy dismantles this myth directly.

Pleasure has no hierarchy. There is no superior or inferior way to orgasm. If a vibrator enhances pleasure, it is not competition. It’s collaboration.

When proposing toys:

  • Share what excites you about them
  • Ask for your partner’s thoughts and experiences
  • Stay curious rather than defensive

If your partner feels hesitant, explore a scaled-down version. Instead of jumping into anal play, perhaps start with external touch. Instead of a full role-play scenario, begin with flirtatious language.

Negotiation keeps intimacy alive. Shutdown kills it.

Accountability Builds Erotic Trust

No one communicates perfectly. At some point, something will land poorly. The difference between couples who deepen and couples who disconnect lies in repair.

Instead of defending, try:
“I see how that hurt you. I’m sorry. Here’s what I’m learning.”

Accountability does not mean you are wrong as a person. It means you value the connection enough to grow.

Ditch the Performance Script

Sex is not a performance review. It is an emergent, co-created experience. Perfectionism creates pressure; play creates possibility.

When partners stop trying to impress and start experimenting, sex becomes more spacious and less stressful.

Pleasure Is Personal

Perhaps the most important takeaway from this episode is that sexuality is not one-size-fits-all. Bodies respond differently. Desires vary. Confidence develops over time.

There is no universal “right” way to do sex.

As long as it is consensual, it is valid.
