Why Triggers Show Up in Intimacy and How Presence Creates Repair with Dr. Willow and Leah Piper

We often expect intimacy to feel good simply because it is wanted. And yet, even in loving, consensual relationships, moments arise when the body suddenly contracts, shuts down, or floods with emotion. “Wanted” doesn’t always translate to “safe” in our nervous systems. In this episode of Deeper with Darshana, Darshana Avila speaks with Dr. Willow and Leah Piper about why this happens and how intimacy can become a site of healing rather than harm.

This conversation reframes triggers not as failures, but as invitations.

Why Triggers Arise During Intimacy

Triggers often emerge when sensory cues activate stored memory in the body. Touch, smell, tone of voice, or power dynamics can evoke past experiences even when the present moment is consensual and desired.

As Dr. Willow explains, trauma is held in the tissues. If it hasn’t been integrated, the body may react before the mind can make sense of what’s happening. This can look like dissociation, freezing, sudden anger, or an urge to escape.

These responses are not random. They are protective.

Dissociation and the Body’s Survival Intelligence

Leah Piper shares deeply personal stories of dissociation during sexual experiences, both during childhood trauma and later in consensual intimacy. Dissociation, she explains, is a way the body ensures survival when something feels overwhelming.

The problem isn’t the dissociation itself. The problem arises when we judge it, override it, or force ourselves to keep going without attunement.

When dissociation is met with curiosity rather than shame, it often begins to soften on its own.

Presence as a Healing Practice

Presence is a central theme of the conversation. Not presence as a buzzword, but presence as a felt state of being in union with oneself and another.

Presence allows the nervous system to catch up to the moment. It makes space for pausing without abandoning connection. It supports attunement, choice, and repair.

When presence is mutual, intimacy becomes safer, even when difficult emotions arise.

Why Defensiveness Escalates Triggers

One of the most common relational breakdowns occurs when one person becomes triggered and the other becomes defensive. Defensiveness often arises from shame, fear of being wrong, or feeling rejected.

This creates a feedback loop where both nervous systems escalate, deepening disconnection.

As the guests explain, interrupting this pattern requires someone to slow things down, name what’s happening, and reorient toward safety rather than resolution.

Safety Strategies Are Not Identity

A powerful insight from the episode is the distinction between essence and pattern. Our fight, flight, freeze, or appease responses are safety strategies developed early in life. They are not who we are.

Understanding our own safety strategies, and those of our partners, allows for more compassion and less personalization during moments of stress.

Curiosity as an Antidote to Shame

The conversation closes with an invitation to replace judgment with curiosity. Asking “Isn’t this interesting?” creates space where shame once lived.

Curiosity slows the nervous system. It restores choice. It opens the door to deeper intimacy and erotic repair.

Triggers, in this light, are not interruptions to intimacy. They are thresholds.
